WHAT IS CHILEAN SEA BASS?
Actually, it is known by the name Patagonian Toothfish. Not exactly enticing, is it? Because of this, the name of the sea bass species found close to Chile is Chilean Sea Bass.
This flaky fish with a mild taste is wildly popular. The southern Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans’ chilly waters are home to long-living fish that reproduce slowly. Owing to overfishing caused by this, it is now one of the most costly white fish due to supply and demand.
Although it has more calories than other fish, it is still low in calories and high in protein. It’s a terrific option for the main course of a memorable event. It is the ideal supper option for something spectacular and quick to prepare.
WHAT MAKES THIS SKINNY?
Butter sauce is a common cooking method for Chilean sea bass. Due to the air fryer’s similarity to a miniature convection oven, frying it in one eliminates any oil from the cooking process.
Chilean sea bass provides more calories than other seafood like salmon. This lunch is more of a treat because the fish is more pricey and fatty. Cod, tilapia, or mahi mahi are excellent options for air fryer fish dishes if you’re looking for a lean white fish, but Chilean sea bass’s flaky texture and buttery flavor are unmatched.
When compared to other fish, it has a higher calorie count, but when compared to other indulgent meals, it’s a terrific choice and is full of nutrients.
RECIPE INGREDIENT NOTES
Spanish sea bass. You require one pound. Usually, the fish is offered in amounts of half a pound, a pound, or even more. It shouldn’t contain bones unless you choose a bigger half-fish fillet, which typically weighs approximately 2 pounds (but always check).
If feasible, cut a one-pound chunk in half or divide it into two half-pound pieces. If you’d want to stretch the food any farther (to make four smaller portions), you may use the two half-pound chunks after it’s been cooked.
Before beginning the preparation, dab any extra moisture from the fresh fish fillets with a paper towel.
Olive oil mist A few sprays of olive oil spray will do in place of basting with oil.
Sour cream. Tamari or soy sauce can be used, either regular or gluten-free.
Aji Mirin or Mirin. This Japanese cooking rice wine may be purchased on the grocery store’s foreign aisle. It imparts a tart and sweet taste. Aji Mirin, which translates as “tastes like Mirin,” can be utilized when real Mirin is occasionally difficult to locate. It has a flavor that is quite similar to mirin but a little sweeter.
Shredded ginger. Grated fresh ginger is what you’ll use. On the small holes, use a microplane or a box grater. When compared to dicing, grated ginger allows for better glaze mixing. You may also use ginger paste that you stir in.
Minced garlic. The garlic must also be grated before being added to the glaze, much like the ginger. You may also use garlic paste that you stir in.
Maple sugar. A teaspoon provides a small amount of sweetness to balance the salty soy sauce.
NOTE ON AIR FRYING
A nutritious fish meal may be quickly prepared using this simple air fryer recipe and very little oil. In actuality, we seldom ever use any olive oil spray. One of our favorite fish recipes, it results in seasoned fish with a beautiful brown surface without either deep fried or pan frying.
Air fryers come in many sizes and brands, and they all cook somewhat differently. It’s crucial to keep an eye on the fish’s doneness and make adjustments for your air fryer. The sea bass in the air fryer will be fully cooked if you use an instant read food thermometer.

EXPERT TIPS
Size does matter. The amount of time needed to cook your filets depends on their size and thickness. For optimal results, try to prepare filets that are around the same thickness so they will cook at the same rate.
Use a thermometer with an immediate read. Checking the fish’s internal temperature is the most secure method of determining if it is cooked. Insert without touching the air fryer into the thickest section of the filet. It should be 135 degrees Fahrenheit.
FAQs
What should the internal temperature of the Chilean sea bass be when it’s cooked?
135 degrees F. Even after it has been taken out of the air fryer, the temperature will still be somewhat elevated.
Is the skin of sea bass edible?
Yes! Since the skin of the fish becomes quite flaky when cooked, keeping it on helps prevent it from coming apart. You can either eat the fish and discard the skin, or you can consume the skin.
Can you cook frozen sea bass in an air fryer?
You can air fried frozen sea bass if you don’t have time to thaw it first. Just a few additional minutes are needed! Unseasoned frozen sea bass filet should be air-fried for three minutes 400°F (200C). The fish is then ready to be used in the recipe above as fresh sea bass after being defrosted.
Are air fryers good for fish?
With an air fryer, frying fish at home is simpler than ever. An air fryer may be used to cook frozen or fresh fish, and the dish will taste like it came right out of your favorite seafood restaurant. No small burns from hot oil splashes or extra calories from cooking it in fat are a concern.
